2014 Trek Verve 3

Trek's Verve 3 is a super-plush ride no matter where you choose to roam thanks to an easy-pedaling aluminum frame and a suspension fork that smooths any road or path. Sublime comfort comes in the form of a relaxed, easy-on-the-back riding position and adjustable stem with wide handlebars. Plus, you'll love the cushy Bontrager seat and suspension seatpost that makes the bumps disappear. In addition to being comfortable, the 24 gears provide easy pedaling and climbing, too. If you forgot how much fun riding is, one ride on the Verve, and you'll never forget.

Nice bike; terrible seat

By Rick

Cons

  • Seat Very Uncomfortable

Best Uses

Comments:

Bike is used to get exercise on an every other day basis. Bought this because it is the replacement for Trek 7300 which I love but have taken to my cabin for the summer. Everything is great except the seat which is extremely uncomfortable after about 15 nminutes of riding. My older Trek has a very comfortable seat. i had to spend $50 to get a replacement seat. This should never happen with a Trek bike and is a big negative.

The only flaw is, and I read in a previous review, in a certain gear sounds link a brake rubbing but it is not. Will have checked at first tune-up. Will be buying a second Verve for wife. Most comfortable grip ever.

    Comments:

I bought my first road bike 35years ago. My first Trek in 2004 great bike never had any problems loved to ride that bike. Now years later I'm looking for more of an upright ride. I rode another brand hybrid. The trek hybrid, and "I can't explain why "the trek felt better to me than any other bike. Still something was missing. After riding the Versa AHAAA. the dual sport is what I'm enjoying. Hitting the trails 4days week and loving it!

This bike is everything I hoped it would be. Extremely comfortable and stable feeling. The smoothest shifting and most comfortable bike I have ever owned (I'm 71 years old).

I find the bike very comfortable and solid. I was worried because I weigh over 300 lbs and the bike is so light, I figured I might have some problems. It's been great.

I ride around the neighborhood, to the beach, on bike trails and in local county parks. The bike pedals very smoothly and changes gears with precision. I find I can ride 20-30% faster with the same effort as with my previous mountain bike.

        Chain will rub front derailleur

              Comments:

I will state up front that I am a demanding customer. What bothers me may not bother you. The Verve 3 is designed by TREK so that the chain will lightly brush the front derailleur in the highest and lowest gear settings. This is a quote from TREK: "With an 8 speed triple system there will be rubbing in the extremes.(high gear/low gear). Without that, there is the possibility of the chain being thrown off of the large chainring or the small ring into the frame." Do you think this is good bike design? As an overall bike, the Verve 3 is very nice, but I think TREK can do better on the front derailleur. The chain rubbing led me to very closely inspect the crank set gears. As it turns out, the largest gear is not perfectly "flat" so that it moves very slightly to one side through about 30 degrees of arc. Not much to the side, but the other two gears do not do this, so why only this one? With a tight derailleur clearance, this only increases the problem. The second thing I found was that the gear teeth on the middle and largest gears are not the same height. Around 6 - 8 teeth are shorter than the rest. This does not affect engaging the chain, but to me it indicates poor manufacturing quality. If you can make 97% of the teeth the correct size, you can do it for 100%. Third, the front tire makes a slight rubbing sound at one point in the revolution. It sounds like a brake pad gently touching the sidewall, but that is not what is happening because I checked that. The wheel shows no sign of being bent to the side. The sound only occurs when the tire rotates forward. I cannot find any point of contact between the tire and any part of the bike. Since the bike is new, maybe this will go away after it wears in. The only other possibility would seem to be something in the hub and I hate to imagine that.

                  Comments:

I like this bike alot. I feel comfortable on it and it is easy to switch gears. The seat is good so my bottom doesn't hurt. It has shocks which help me not feel the bumps in the road as much. It is a joy to ride and the best bike I've ever had.
